ALGERIA-LANGUAGE PROTEST
AFTER RIOTS, THOUSANDS PROTEST ARABIC-ONLY LAW

TIZI-OUZOU, ALGERIA (AP) _ SEVERAL THOUSAND PEOPLE MARCHED AGAINST ALGERIA’S ARABIC-ONLY LAW TUESDAY IN THE COUNTRY’S ETHNIC BERBER CAPITAL THAT HAS BEEN THE SCENE OF SEVERAL DAYS OF RIOTING.
POLICE REPORTED NO INCIDENTS DURING THE RALLY IN THE CITY 100 KMS (60 MILES) EAST OF ALGIERS, SHAKEN BY UNREST AFTER MUSLIM MILITANTS ASSASSINATED THE REGION’S POPULAR SINGER LOUNES MATOUB LAST WEEK.
FOUR PEOPLE DIED IN VIOLENCE WHICH RAGED IN SEVERAL OF THE REGION’S CITIES INHABITED BY BERBERS, A MUSLIM PEOPLE WITH THEIR OWN LANGUAGE. MATOUB WAS AN OUTSPOKEN DEFENDER OF BERBER CULTURE.
THE LANGUAGE LAW, DUE TO COME INTO EFFECT SUNDAY, WOULD EFFECTIVELY BAN FROM OFFICIAL USE OTHER LANGUAGES INCLUDING BERBER, ALSO KNOWN AS TAMAZIGHT, AND FRENCH, WHICH IS WIDELY USED IN THIS FORMER FRENCH COLONY.
MANY SEE THE ARABIC-ONLY LAW AS AN EFFORT BY THE MILITARY-BACKED GOVERNMENT TO APPEASE SUPPORTERS OF ISLAMIC MOVEMENTS IN A 6-YEAR-OLD INSURGENCY THAT HAS LEFT MORE THAN 75,000 PEOPLE DEAD.
TIZI-OUZOU WAS IN A SHAMBLES, WITH MOST OF ITS TRAFFIC LIGHTS, STREET LAMPS AND BUS STOPS DAMAGED. RIOTERS ALSO BURNED A CINEMA, STATE DEPARTMENT STORES, STATE BANKS AND AIR ALGERIE, AMONG OTHER OFFICES.
AFTER THE DEATH OF MATOUB, MOURNERS CHANTED, “WE ARE NOT ARABS!” AND CARRIED PORTRAITS OF THE SINGER AND SIGNS READING, “NO PEACE WITHOUT THE BERBER LANGUAGE.”
THE MUSLIM INSURGENCY BEGAN AFTER THE GOVERNMENT CANCELED SECOND-ROUND PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS IN JANUARY 1992. THE ISLAMIC SALVATION FRONT WAS TIPPED TO WIN THE BALLOTING FROM VOTER ANGER OVER HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT AND CORRUPTION IN THIS PETROLEUM-RICH NORTH AFRICAN NATION.
